Molecular and genetic analysis of two closely linked genes that encode, respectively, a protein phosphatase 1/2A/2B homolog and a protein kinase homolog in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120.
Reversible protein phosphorylation plays important roles in signal transduction. One gene, prpA, encoding a protein similar to eukaryotic types of phosphoprotein phosphatases PP1, PP2A, and PP2B, was cloned from the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. strain PCC 7120. Interestingly, a eukaryotic-type protein kinase gene, pknE, was found 301 bp downstream of prpA. This unusual genetic ar...

A cell-free system exhibiting both photophosphorylation (P /2e = 1) and oxidative phosphoryla tion (P/O up to 0 .8 ) is described for the cyanobacterium Anabaena variabilis. NADH and N A D PH were found to be equally effective as electron donors for oxidative phosphorylation. Low concentrations of U H D B T , an inhibitor of the cytochrome blc complex of mitochondria and chloroplasts. were fou...
متن کاملDevT (Alr4674), resembling a Ser/Thr protein phosphatase, is essential for heterocyst function in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120.
Heterocyst-forming cyanobacteria are able to perform oxygenic photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation simultaneously in the same filament, by restricting the highly O(2)-sensitive nitrogenase to specialized cells, the heterocysts. A remarkable change in morphology and metabolism accompanies the differentiation of heterocysts, which only occurs when no source of combined nitrogen is available. In t...
متن کاملRegulation of potassium-dependent Kdp-ATPase expression in the nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Anabaena torulosa.
The KdpB polypeptides in the cyanobacterium Anabaena torulosa were shown to be two membrane-bound proteins of about 78 kDa, expressed strictly under K(+) deficiency and repressed or degraded upon readdition of K(+). In both Anabaena and Escherichia coli strain MC4100, osmotic and ionic stresses caused no significant induction of steady-state KdpB levels during extreme potassium starvation.
